SPL Children's 500 Books Before Middle School

500 Books Before Middle School is a nationwide reading program for elementary school kids in kindergarten to grade 5. The goal is to complete 500 books before entering grade 6. It's a big goal, but simply reading or listening to two books a week for five years will put you above the 500 mark!

The journey is as fun as it is easy. Sign up through READsquared and come to the library to receive your start-up packet with some cool surprises. Be sure to log every book you read and you will receive a progress button for every 50 books and special prizes for each 100 book milestone. We also know that reading 500 books is a big goal, so to encourage continued participation, we will hold prize drawings twice a year for children who have logged books in the previous six months. Drawings will be held on:

September 1 for books logged from March 1–August 31.

March 1 for books logged from September 1–February 28.

When you have read and logged 500 books, come to the library for your certificate, choice of book, and completion prize.

SPL Teens 100 Books Before Graduation

A YEAR-ROUND READING CHALLENGE FOR GRADES 6-12!

Read 100 books before you graduate high school and get prizes!

That’s SO many books!!

On average, it’s about 1 book a month, if you start in 6th grade! It’s a challenge, not a race!

How Does It Work?

Go to Readsquared and sign up for SPL Teens 100 Books Before Graduation.
Come to TeenSpace to receive your start-up folder and exclusive bookmark.
Read a book of your choice.
When you finish the book, sign into ReadSquared to log it.
Every book logged needs to have a review of at least 5 sentences.
Let us know your favorite part, about a character you loved or hated, why you didn’t like the book, etc.
Keep doing this until you have read and logged 100 books.

WHY SHOULD I DO THIS?

Studies have shown that reading for pleasure and enjoyment has a positive impact both academically and socially. Reading can provide stress relief, increase empathy, improve your vocabulary, and develop your writing skills. There are books for everyone, let’s find yours!
